We are launching the Cybersecurity Advocacy Fund — a new initiative designed to support students, researchers, professors, and university groups working on ideas that raise awareness around cybersecurity and digital threats.
The fund will support initiatives ranging from creative advocacy projects and academic research to early-stage technological concepts that help people better understand online risks.
Applications for the first funding cycle will open in September 2026. Until then, we are publicly launching the program’s criteria, structure, and application information.
Inspired by “Bot or Not?”
The Cybersecurity Advocacy Fund was inspired by projects like “Bot or Not?” — an interactive experience created by Malmö University students and supported by Surfshark during Milan Design Week 2026. The project explored how difficult it has become to distinguish bots from real people online, turning cybersecurity research into a hands-on public experience.
What kind of initiatives will the fund support?
The program is open globally and focuses on initiatives connected to cybersecurity awareness, including:
- Creative advocacy projects and installations;
- Cybersecurity and digital rights research;
- Technological concepts and experimental ideas.
Selected initiatives may receive financial support, expert mentorship, and amplification through Surfshark channels and media outreach. The annual fund may distribute up to €100,000 across multiple selected initiatives.
When do applications open?
The fund will operate in two yearly cycles:
- September applications → October selection period;
- February applications → March selection period.
