TikTok’s future in the United States hangs in the balance following recent legislative action. Under the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act of 2024, ByteDance was required to divest its US operations by January 19, 2025 if it wanted to maintain its presence in the country. Though ByteDance challenged the law on First Amendment grounds, the US Supreme Court unanimously upheld it on January 17, 2025.
After missing the divestiture deadline, TikTok briefly suspended its US services on January 18. President Trump subsequently announced a 75-day delay of the ban through executive order, allowing TikTok to resume operations. However, the app remains unavailable for new downloads on US app stores while companies await legal clarity.
