TikTok’s future in the United States remains uncertain amid ongoing legislative and executive actions.
Under the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act of 2024, ByteDance was required to divest its US operations by January 19, 2025, to maintain its presence in the country. After missing the divestiture deadline, TikTok briefly suspended its US services on January 18. However, President Trump subsequently announced a 75-day delay of the ban through executive order, allowing TikTok to resume operations.
With the April 5 deadline nearing, three Democratic senators, emphasizing the need for a long-term solution, pressed the White House to seek congressional approval to extend the divestiture deadline to October. As the situation develops, ByteDance and potential US buyers discuss a deal to increase their stakes in ByteDance and acquire TikTok’s US operations to prevent a ban. In the meantime, businesses and users alike await legal clarification on TikTok’s future.
