What is malware attack monitoring, and how is it beneficial to you?

Malware attack monitoring, a feature of Surfshark’s data breach detector Alert, keeps you informed about the safety of your device and data against malware threats.

A malware attack happens when hackers deploy malicious software (malware) to gain access to a person’s devices. For example, someone unknowingly installs malware, accidentally allowing hackers to access sensitive information, monitor activities, or steal valuable data.

This is where the malware attack monitoring feature comes in — if your email address is breached due to malware on your device, Alert will notify you immediately. This enables you to respond swiftly by removing the malware to prevent further damage.

How is malware attack monitoring different from Antivirus?

Alert’s malware attack monitoring feature notifies you if your email address is compromised due to malware on your device — even if that malware got there a long time ago. It informs you of the threat so you can take action to prevent further damage (for example, changing the password of your affected account).

Antivirus software is a tool for securing devices from malware attacks. It provides real-time protection, prevents malware from accessing your device, and removes it if it’s already present. So, if you get a notification that your device has been infected, you can take action with Surfshark Antivirus to clear the malware from your device.

If you’re not using any tools to safeguard your devices yet, start now — try Antivirus.

How to use the malware attack monitoring feature

To use this feature, you will need an active Surfshark One or One+ subscription. If you’re already using Alert to monitor your details, there’s no need to take extra steps — you will get malware attack alerts just as you would about data breaches. A malware attack alert informs you of the breach date, the affected device’s name and operating system, the details leaked, and recommended actions to mitigate the attack.

If you haven’t set up Alert yet, do the following:

    1. Go to the Surfshark login page and log in.
    2. Find the Alert tab on the left panel and select Monitor emails.
    3. Check the box and click Continue
    4. Enter your email address and click Activate. You will need to verify your email address to enable the monitoring.
    5. That’s it — you’re now monitoring your email for data breaches and malware attacks.
